When Was Pluto Last in Aquarius?
Updated October 5, 2026
As of October 2026, Pluto is in Aquarius. Pluto first entered Aquarius on 23 March 2023; because retrograde motion carries it back and forth across the sign's boundary, it enters four times in this pass and leaves for good on 19 January 2044. It moves on into Pisces on 9 March 2043, and retrograde motion brings it back on 1 September 2043. Before that, Pluto first entered Aquarius on 4 April 1777 and, because retrograde motion carried it back and forth across the sign's boundary, entered it five times in all before leaving for good on 26 December 1798. After this pass, Pluto returns to Aquarius on 25 March 2269.
Each bar runs from first entry to final exit. Stretches marked with a neighbouring sign are times it crossed back over the boundary before returning. The outlined stretch is under way now.

Pluto in Aquarius: context
Pluto is a modern addition that Hellenistic astrology never knew. Clyde Tombaugh found it at Lowell Observatory on 18 February 1930 by comparing plates taken on 23 and 29 January, when it stood at about 18° Cancer. In the traditional scheme Aquarius is a house of Saturn (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17). Uranus was discovered during Pluto's last pass through Aquarius, on 13 March 1781, with Pluto at 6° Aquarius.
That pass, 1777–98, overlaps the French Revolution. Richard Tarnas, though, ties "the French Revolutionary epoch of 1787–98" to the Uranus–Pluto opposition, an aspect, not to Pluto's sign (Cosmos and Psyche, 2006; "World Transits 2000–2020", 2010). He has said that in his research the signs, though still meaningful to him, "receded in significance" beside planets and aspects.

How Pluto moves through the zodiac
Across 1600–2800, Pluto spent about 12 years to 32 years in a sign on each pass, not counting retrograde dips out of it, and it returned to the same sign about every 246 years. 100% of passes included at least one retrograde dip back over a sign boundary.

How these dates were found
With Horoskopos's sky search: Pluto's geocentric, apparent, tropical ecliptic longitude, computed with the open-source Astronomy Engine library, with each sign boundary found to the minute. Sample ingresses agree with NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris to within an hour for 2023–43, about three hours for the 1850s–80s and about 15 hours for the 1770s: Pluto moves so slowly that a sliver of an arcminute in position becomes hours in time. Pluto comes from an integrated orbit that is reliable from about 1 CE to 3999 CE. Data generated 2026-10-04; page built 2026-10-05.
